Diablo II

Duriel

Animated Duriel

Type: Demon

First appearance: Act II Bosses

Description: As the Sin War plodded along through the centuries, many in Hell began to wonder just what it was they were fighting over. The Lesser Evils of Hell were growing tired of the endless ebb and flow in the tides of mortal favor, as well as those in the elaborate schemes of the three Prime Evils - Diablo, Baal and Mephisto. The Lesser Evils longed to return to the epic days of the Great Conflict, and lay siege again to the gates of the High Heavens.

Two of the Lesser Evils, Azmodan and Belial, saw the situation as their chance to overthrow the Prime Evils and take control of Hell for themselves. The two Demon lords made a pact with Andariel and Duriel - as well as their minor brethren - assuring them that humanity would not deter the ultimate victory of Hell. Azmodan and Belial devised a plan to end the stalemate and achieve victory in the Sin War, ultimately riding the bloody crest of the Great Conflict straight into Armageddon. Thus, a great revolution was set into motion as all of Hell went to war against the Three Brothers, seeking to send them into a Dark Exile.

Over the next two centuries, the three imprisoned brothers focused their Demonic powers upon corrupting the Soulstones that bound them to the mortal plane and began bending the will of any nearby humans. Mephisto was the first imprisoned and, consequently, was the first to break free from his bondage. His wrath against those who had put him such a compromised position was swift and merciless.

As punishment for his part in the Dark Exile that sent the Prime Evils to the mortal realm, Duriel has been left behind by Baal to guard the Tomb of Tal Rasha. Embittered by this new position of solitary servitude, the Lord of Pain has claimed the souls and blood of many bold adventurers.

Tips and Behavior: The Lord of Pain is a straight melee monster, unlike the other Act bosses. However, as soon as you pop into Tal Rasha's chamber, there is no escape; the exit is blocked off, and a Town Portal is the only way out of the small, square room. After the initial taunt, Duriel will immediately attack you from the bottom left of the screen. He can only land melee blows, but he makes up for it by having no less than 4 different types of attacks. His regular melee attack does the least damage, and he'll use it occasionally if he's right up against the player. His second attack is the Jab, similar to the Amazons skill of the same name. It only looks like a rapid 1-2 hit from each of his pincers, but in reality he ends up striking three blows, each for a substantial damage. He can also switch to a stunning attack from in close, which not only immobilizes the player for a moment, but also knocks the target back several steps. Finally, his most feared melee attack is his Charge. He is most dangerous from several steps away, because he can utilize a rapid burst of speed that strikes the player with tremendous damage. This knocks the player back as well, just enough distance so he can do another charge.

If all this wasn't enough, lurking underneath the bulbous body is a Holy Freeze Aura. If the player is within the appropriate range, the aura will chill him or her for a long duration, greatly decreasing mobility. Holy Freeze, like the Paladin aura, is unlike a regular cold spell; this has its good and bad points. It's good in that it's not nearly as debilitating as an ice spell; when Holy "Frozen", you're still much faster than is you were chilled by a monster with ice bolt or some such. However, Holy Freeze cannot be resisted. Cold Resistance will not work against Duriel. Neither will Thaw Potions. The Cold aura is there and there isn't a lot you can do about it.

Fortunately, there are no other monsters in the small chamber besides Duriel, so you can concentrate all your enemies info defeating this one monster. The first time you fight Duriel on a difficulty level, the chamber is sealed, and a doorway on the left will only open after you defeat the Lord of Pain. Afterwards, if you go back to fight him on that difficulty level, the doorway out is open, and you have the option to fight him in a much bigger arena, in the large room where Tal Rasha used to be locked up.
